ZAABU ART COLLECTIVE
The alleyway is right off Jinja's main street, like most of them It’s narrow, but the walls on either side of me are covered in the most amazing artwork, strolling between lions, elephants, and village scenes I’m met by Pius, he is one of the artists producing some really striking canvases.
It’s 2020, and my trip is almost done, so it is time to search out gifts and bring home some art that, I one day might have a wall to hang on. I chose two large canvases, each about a meter tall, they share half of the same elephant looking directly at me. Pius explained his process using forks to create the shape style and texture of the paintings, adding in the vibrant colours against the earthy tones and I was set to take this elephant home.
Roll onto our Uganda 2022 trip and I find myself introducing our Think People Think Story guests to Pius, I know they will also fall in love with a painting or two and hopefully take one home just like I did. It’s still early in the trip but the seed is planted.
Sitting and talking with Pius, he is working hard as part of an Art collective. 4 artists work from the studio and sell their pieces in the shop on the main street. The shop is much fuller than the alleyway. Floor-to-ceiling art, some very different styles but equally impressive work.
Moving forward Think People Think Story would like to collaborate with Pius and his art collective, so expect to see some of the art in our shop soon, and some more stories about Pius and his team.
